Anniversary/Reunion

We've had a huge influx of registrations this week. Procrastinators of the world have united! It's going to be a great party. If you haven't sent yours in, do it! It's going to be a blast.
We've got the meet and greet at Pam Ayers' house Friday, the MSU tour, lunch, CR reception, shopping, and wine tasting all Saturday morning and afternoon (football tickets for the guys), and then the BASH at the Wellington. I don't think we can fit one more thing in. You will get your visiting in!

Schedule of events for Saturday-Day of the Reunion & Sunday
9:30a.m. Tour- meet on the east side of the Student Center -(Libr. side for those who are directional challenged)
We'll have a sign showing who we are. Probably won't be a problem, we'll be the old folks looking lost. It is Mustang Round-Up, so we don't want anyone going astray.
This tour, by the way, will be wonderful! Ashley Smith, Alpha Phi and MSU Ambassador, will lead it. She said we can stop, go in, really where ever we want. She is studying up on everything new and old, so she will be a wealth of information.
We can go inside the Student Center which has some neat computer rooms, bookstore, etc. We then plan on going to the Fine Arts Building, Killingsworth (recently renovated) and the brand new SunWatcher Court. She said they are all "awesome." Then to the new workout center-and Vinson HealthCare-"fantastic and amazing" and circle around to see the Outdoor Building and more workout buildings and the lake.
Next, it's on to the alumni building, which is the little white house, that used to be the grounds keeper's house. The Dr. Beyer greenhouse is behind this building. We'll go the honors dorms-which none of you would have a clue about when you were there-ok, maybe Joanne Williford would.
We'll circle around to see the new Jack Stevens' Mustangs and the Bikers (sculptures). She's going to point out several things along the way. We will end up at the new Dillard Business Building. It truly is amazing. I think everyone will be very impressed.

12:00ish We will end our tour there and have lunch in the Dillard Board Room. If there is somewhere else you would like to go or see, let me Judy Cookingham, judycookingham@sbcglobal.net know and we can do it. We will go by the autistic houses, obviously, not the correct name. They are really, really neat. MSU is one of 2 schools in the nation that houses highly functional autistic students. Because this is their home, we shouldn't go in. A MSU professor has been instrumental in getting this started-neat story, but you'll have to wait for the tour to hear about it.

Leslee Ponder, who is in charge of alumni relations, has arranged and is paying for us to have an MSU shuttle. Leslee and her group have been wonderful and so helpful!
Also, the Dillard Bldg. usually only lets organizations that are affiliated with the business school use the board room, but Lynn in the Student Center hooked us up. It will be a light lunch of sandwiches, chips, tea , fruit platter (dessert at the reception). The cost of lunch is $5.00 and will be catered by MSU. We will have to give him a number by Wednesday, Nov. 4th (let me know).
We can visit in there until 1:30 or walk around the quadrangle.
Kyle Williams can get discounted tickets (we're working on free )for the nationally ranked MSU football game for any of the guys who want to go. Of course, we need to let him know that week.

1:30 On to the reception at the "new" Chapter Room.

2:30ish After we "recept," anyone who wants to go on a SSS (we'll call it Sisterhood Shopping Spree) can ride in Suburbans to the cutesy, locally owned shops.
First to the Containery, where Beth Hamilton is giving Alpha Phis discounts that day. I'm going to meet with her and get the information.
We'll walk a few doors down to Miks. Brittany, an Alpha Phi, used to work there. They're working on something for us. Lifestyles is in-between and I can contact Janie McGowen, if you want me, too. Andrea Wellsfry of Polkadot Penguin is going to host a wine and cheese tasting party for the Alpha Phis!
She will need an estimated number that week so she will know how many to plan for.
They have all been very enthusiastic and generous toward us. So, you'll have to act really nice if you go on the SSS :)
oh, and bring $$$

We'll end up back at MSU, or if they need to be taken back to the hotels, we can do that.

6:30 The Wellington and Banquet...The professional photographer will be taking pledge class pictures and an entire group picture. etc. If you want your "family" Big/Little Sister picture taken-round 'em up. Start thinking about what other pictures you want taken. She'll do anything and stay as long as we need her to stay.It just costs more, so we'd like to keep it moving. The CD of the entire evening will be on sale for either $10 or $15 and will be mailed, hopefully the next week.

While the Divas are having their pictures taken, the Hunks will be outside by the fireplace. There will be a bar, and Margarita machine out there along with a cigar bar. The cigars have Alpha Phi "cigar Aficionado designer" labels. They will certainly be a collector's item and there is only a limited number, so you'll need to grab yours (cigar) fast. There will also be chocolate cigars for those who don't indulge in tobacco cigars. Oh, I'm supposed to tell you the cigars are from the Dominican Republic-that's supposed to mean something. The labels are "priceless" The cigars will be around $7.00.

Sunday morning,TBA- at the hotel and after breakfast, Kathy K. Drake will give us a little send off message. She really is a great speaker and will do a super job. She has a huge heart for college girls, so I hope some of them can come.

This is the time we can say our good-byes

Anniversary/Reunion

Wow! Thanks to everyone who has already sent in their registrations! It looks like we're going to have a great turnout! If you or anyone you know is planning on coming, we need to get your money/registration by October 23 so that we can firm up the dinner reservations and Pam will have an idea as to how many are going to show up for the Friday night "Meet and Greet" at her house. We're getting excited...it's less than a month away.

The Anniversary/Reunion

OK, we've heard that some of you are hesitant about coming without a husband or date to the Saturday night party. Don't worry about it, come for the fun! Just so you'll know, the reservations are running about half and half (husbands or no husbands). It's a celebration. Really, when are you going to see all of these people again? How long has it been since you've seen them. Come for the FUN! Reconnect with sisters you haven't seen in a looooong time.

MSU Tour Update

The tour of the MSU campus, lead by Alpha Phi and MSU Ambassador Amanda Smith, will begin outside on the east side/Library side of the Bookstore.
The tour is scheduled for 9:30-11:30.

There is a shuttle stop there, and we will have an Alpha Phi sign. We will go inside the newer buildings and see the new sculptures by Jack Stevens. If there is any place you would like to go, please let us know. We will end up at the new Dillard School of Business.

The tour is free and Leslee Ponder, head of MSU alumni, has graciously arranged for us to have a shuttle. If you would like, you can eat lunch in the Dillard board room. MSU is catering the meal for around $7. The reason we don't know the exact price just yet is because that week-end is Mustang Round-up (for high school seniors). It won't affect us in anyway, except the Student Center is using all their rooms for them. However, it works out great for us because we get to use the board room. We thought this would be easy, quiet, inexpensive and fast. We can walk across the quadrangle to the chapter room, at our leisure.

Sorry if there was confusion about the price. If you're having any questions or suggestions as to where you would like to tour, please let me know.

Also, if you think you might want to take the tour, let me know, so we can have enough shuttles. We'll talk lunch in a few weeks.

See you in November,
Judy Cookingham

We've lost a Sister

With deep sadness, we've lost a dear friend and sister Judy Spurlock Poole '74. She died last Wednesday, September 23, of a heart attack. She had been under a doctor's care and was recently given a good report. This is one of those unfortunate events that remind us that life is so very fragile. Services are pending, her daughter is teaching in Japan and the family is waiting until she can get home to Austin. If you would like to send a card, the address is:

Poole Family

12400 Deer Trak

Austin, TX 78727-5744

Above is a picture of Judy and her pledge class at the Celebration for Marylea three years ago. We'll miss her laughter and sarcastic wit.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

The Anniversary/reunion committee has been working non-stop (not really, it just feels that way). We're hoping for a big turnout. Surprisingly, we've only had 6, yes six, sisters send in their registrations. Now girls, don't procrastinate too long. We're wanting to get all the reservations in by October 23. That's only one month away. It seems like a long time, but you know how time flies...especially this time of year. Write out some Post-its to remind yourself, go to the website and print off the form, write your check, and get it in the mail. We love you all and want to party with you in November.

News flash! We heard through the grapevine today that the Chi Omegas are discussing redecorating their chapter room. I saw it last summer and it was really nice, they should really keep their door locked. I can't believe they want to redo it. I guess they have to keep up with the competition!

Pictures of the new CR

These pictures don't do it justice. You'll have to come and see it in November!

Friday, September 4, 2009

This is an email received from Sandy Andonian, the chapter advisor:

Just thought I would give you a quick update on how Open House went last night. There are some wonderful young women going through recruitment! There are a total of 76 potentials. The parties went very smooth last night, and our room was a hit! The potentials were saying that Alpha Phi has the most beautiful chapter room. :)

Last Delivery for Now

The dining room, study, and bistro tables arrive today as well as the new hutch! Keep your fingers crossed that they're all in good shape this time. Margaret is ironing the new drapes today while waiting on the deliveries. The collegiates have hired the "Mighty Maids" to come and do a thorough cleaning tomorrow. Rush/Recruitment is this weekend! Yee Haa!!!

Reunion and Chapter Room

We mailed out over 500 invitations (251 emails and 249 snail mails) for the November 6 and 7 Anniversary Reunion last Monday. We're also posting in the Sunwatcher and, hopefully, the Wichita Falls paper. If we missed someone, it's not because of a lack of trying. If you know of someone who did not get the information, please pass it on to them.

The makeover in the Chapter Room is moving right along. This week was taken up with "accent decorating". Don't forget to send your donation. Check the website http://www.goalphaphi.info

Grrrrrrrrr!

I have this theory about life...just when you think everything is going as it should, a big crane comes down and picks you up and moves you to another place. That's kind of what happened this afternoon with the furniture delivery. The sofas (4) and chairs (4) and a couple of accent tables arrived in perfect shape. The dining table and the table for the study apparently were broken, hence a return delivery trip NEXT Tuesday. All the chairs that go with the tables were left, they are just sans tables. The bar table and chairs have been back ordered, we'll find out tomorrow when they will make their way to W.F. What is there looks good. The collegiates had the carpets cleaned last weekend. Now it's a waiting game for tables. Stay tuned, the drama continues.

The Furniture Has Arrived!!

Mathis Brothers delivered the furniture this afternoon! They arrived around 2:15 and, as of 5:00, are still there putting everything together. Margaret (Myers) and Judy (Cookingham) are there supervising as well as some of the collegiates. This is an exciting day. We'll post pictures soon.

Reunion Information has been sent out.

The information about the Reunion in November has been sent out. If you have been receiving emails from us, that is how you will be notified, the current count is 251. We mailed out 246 postcards today to those members with physical addresses only. We're still missing about a hundred people, but at this point they apparently don't want to be found. If you hear of someone who did not receive an invitation, please have them access the information on the web at www.goalphaphi.info
We don't want to intentionally miss anyone.

Last call for Addresses

The big mailout is coming up. We still need addresses, especially email. If you've been putting off sending, STOP and do it now. We don't want to miss anyone.

It's been great hearing from so many of you and can't wait to see everyone in November.

Chapter Room-Furniture

Furniture has been purchased! It will be delivered next Tuesday. We decided in order to get everything to match, we had to take out a loan in order to buy it all. The chapter room is going to look fabulous. It will be ready for Rush/Recruitment. We're going to make our deadline.
Keep those donations coming, we do have to repay that loan.

Reunion Information-Preview

In about a week or so, this information will be emailed to those of you that have supplied us with your address and the others will have theirs sent by snail mail.

But if you're reading this, you get the preview about the Reunion!

We have a website: www.goalphaphi.info
Registration, hotels, and a schedule of events can be downloaded.

Just a little FYI..the go stands for Gamma Omega.

The Chapter Room is Painted

The entire chapter room is now painted. We had everything done..kitchen, bath, main room, study, president's office-even the cabinets in the kitchen and the shelves in the study were done! The painter worked out a really sweet deal for us. He and his crew did a very nice job. We are very pleased. The front four windows now have blinds (we installed those today).

Here's something I'll bet many of you didn't know. There is a boarded up window on the east side of the main room. Whoever did it decades ago (we think the maintenance dept. back in the 60's) just taped some sheet rock over it, textured it and threw some paint on it. It's not insulated, you can feel the heat coming from it. Now that the walls are painted one color, its outline is slightly evident. We'll hang something over it, not to worry. It was just a weird thing to discover.

We didn't take any pictures today because all of the old furniture and everything from the study are piled up in the middle of the main room. Nothing can be put on the shelves until they are dry (which will be Saturday morning).

We need to give a big thank you to Margaret (Myers) and Penney (Denman) for dealing with the painters. They had to let them in the CR before 8:00 every morning, check their work and make sure all the touchups were done and make sure everything was locked up at night. Margaret had to run to the paint store a few extra times for paint and supplies. Joanne (Williford) is taking care of the accounting end of all of this. She is dealing with International...not an easy thing and keeping all of our finances in order. Sandy Andonian is the chapter advisor and is a treasure. She gets the younger girls involved; they moved all the furniture so we could paint and they're going to move it all back and reshelve all those supplies. Also a big thank you to all of you who have sent in donations, you have made this part of the makeover possible.

Now, it's on to furniture! If you haven't sent a donation, we could sure use it now. Rush/Recruitment is in a couple of weeks.

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Progress

We've had to stop work on the Chapter Room for a couple of days. The maintanence staff informed us they were waxing floors in the building today and tomorrow and no one is allowed in until Thursday. The rest of the painting will have to wait a couple of days. We're still happily taking much needed donations. Send them to Joanne at the address mentioned earlier.

All plans for the reunion are almost set. We're just firming up the bartender and cash bar for the banquet. We're still searching for addresses, preferably email. In a couple of weeks expect the "Official" invitation. If we have your email address, it will be done via internet (it's much cheaper). If not, you'll be receiving a postcard with the information and website to download the registration form, hotel information, and schedule of events.

If you want to make your hotel reservations early, we've got a special rate at the Holiday Inn Express (it's next door to the Wellington where the banquet will be held) of $93.00 a night.
It's a brand new hotel and very nice. The anniversary reunion is November 6 and 7.

Marco .......Polo

We're down to 134 missing members. Not bad since we started with 626! If you have a minute, check through the list. If you know the address of someone on it, pleeeeease get it to us. We'll take either a physical address or email address (preferably both).
The details for the reunion are almost finalized and we will send out all the info by Sept. 1. There will be a Friday (November 6) "Meet and Greet", something Saturday (November 7) afternoon, and the big bash that night. Stay tuned! Contact us at AlphaPhi50th@AOL.com

It looks FABULOUS!!

The main room has been painted, the kitchen, bathroom and study/storeroom will be finished by next week! Margaret and Penney said it looks like a new place.
We chose a khaki/taupe color for the walls and white for the trim (including doors and kitchen cabinets). It looks really nice with the new carpet. The study/storeroom will be a slightly different color. The wood blinds go up Monday. We are thrilled to get this much done on Stage 1.

The next stage is furniture, our biggest expense. Keep those donations coming, we are finally making some progress and the Chapter Room is starting to regain its beauty and magic.

We'll post pictures as soon as all the painting is done.

Today's update for the Chapter Room

The trim man came last Thursday and got all the baseboards repaired and replaced, he did a very good job. Penney let the painters in this morning and they are working "as we speak". We're making progress! Thanks to those of you who have already sent in donations! We still have a ways to go but we're moving forward.

Reunion

The reunion plans are coming right along. We're getting the address list together. We're still missing about 150 members. We have addresses for about 475! If you've checked the list of "the missing" and know someone's email, please send it. The list was posted last week.

A BIG thank you to those of you who have responded with names and addresses.

Chapter Room Fundraiser Update

The baseboards are being repaired/replaced today. The painter is coming on Monday to paint the main room. Unfortunately, that's all we can afford to do right now. We'd like to paint the study, the bathroom, and the kitchen but our fundraising isn't going as well as we had hoped.

We have over 600 alumni! If only you could each send in at least $10.00, that would help so much. We've seen the other three Chapter Rooms and ours is not even comparable. Those of you that saw it three years ago know what I'm talking about. There is a slide show at the bottom of this blog showing the CR. We're trying to improve it but without your help, there is just so much the 4 of us on the committee can do.

The mailing address has been mentioned a couple of times in this blog. Please, send us your check.

Sisters without addresses

If you know the address/email of anyone on this list, please send it to us (AlphaPhi50th@aol.com) so that we may include them in our mailouts for the Reunion. This list is from Alpha Phi International. As you can see, we're missing quite a few. Here's a bit of trivia, Gamma Omega has initiated 625 since it began in 1959!

Reunion Update

We're still finalizing plans for the reunion. The date is set for November 7 at 6:30 at the new Wellington (it's out on Kell west). Spouses are welcome. It's next door to the new Holiday Inn Express. It's a small convention type place, it makes its debut on September 1.
We got the tour last week, it is really nice. It's something that WF really needs. It's partially owned by John and Penney Denman.

We're still working on some of the details. We have a caterer and we've decided on Mexican food. We're trying to make arrangements for a cash bar (we were told we have to take out a 24 hour insurance policy for that, cha-ching). Table decorations are almost finished (while we had time this summer, we worked on those). International is sending a list of members (625), most of those won't have addresses, unfortunately. If you know of anyone not receiving our emails, please get us their information...we'd really like to do most of this via email instead of USPO.

Our goal is to have everything finalized and mailed out by September 1. If you have questions, either comment here on the blog or email us at AlphaPhi50th@aol.com.

Meet the Chapter Property Committee

Recently, a Chapter Property Committee was formed to improve and update the chapter room during this exciting time of growth. This newly formed committee will have the task of sustaining and improving the chapter facilities. The members of the committee are: Penney Denman '74, Margaret Myers '73, Joanne Williford '73, and Heather Wolford '74. We're all on Facebook. This board has just been activated and we are excited to see what we can accomplish!

Leave us a comment on the blog, let us know what you think.

Decorating update

The Chapter Property Committee met with Erin, our decorator, on Wednesday. She has some great ideas for the Chapter Room. Right now we have enough money to do 2” faux white wood blinds in the windows, fix the baseboards (when the flooring was done, some of them were removed and some just need to be replaced) and we’re painting the walls and woodwork.

The next phase is furniture.
The collection of pieces in the room is a hodgepodge of styles and patterns. Nothing matches and most of it is covered with Wal-mart type slip covers. Appearance wise, we are by no means competitive with the other chapters. This is where we need everyone’s help.

Let’s bring it back to the beautiful place it once was. Please send us a donation to get some nice pieces for our sorority home. We'd like to do a good bit of this before Rush. Like we’ve said before, any amount will be welcomed.

Please make checks out to Alpha Phi and send to:

We look forward to hearing from you,

We are starting to collect pictures for the slideshow at the reunion. Send your pics to AlphaPhi50th@aol.com. Please include your maiden name as well as married, year of initiation, names of all in the photo(s) and what was the occasion. We'd love to have at least one picture from everyone. If you are unable to email a picture, contact us at the above email and we'll make mailing arrangements. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Chapter Room Update #1

We had the preliminary meeting with the decorating consultant and will meet with her again next week after she draws up some ideas. We will probably start with painting first, then window treatments, and then furniture.

Any donation amount will be appreciated. $20.00 buys a gallon of paint! All donations will be in strictest confidence, we will not publish or share amounts given. This is why we have Joanne (our resident C.P.A.) in charge of the money. As sisters in Alpha Phi, we are working on this togeather; whatever amount you can send, will be welcomed.

We are going to begin a fund to pay for much needed painting, window treatments, and furniture.
